Energy Intensive Industry Product-Level GHG Measurement

The standards stack for carbon intensity of energies and products

There is no single product-level GHG standard for the energy and emissions intensive industries — there is a stack. Horizontal LCA grammar at the base, an industry-specific estimation substrate above it, the fast-moving product-attribute layer where the commercial action sits, and, at the top, the forcing functions — not regulation alone, but disclosure, capital-market commitments and buyer demand — that turn voluntary measurement into market-access requirements, and increasingly into priced, tradable markets.

Established stable, widely adopted Quasi-regulatory hardening into a requirement Emerging contested / not consolidated Proposed defined, not yet operative

Commercial lens. Each card is tagged by where the value pools: Demand pull the compliance, disclosure, commitment and buyer pressure that creates the buyers, Certification audited attributes sold at a premium, Data & intelligence the measurement, monitoring and analytics layer, Methodology the underlying grammar others build on.

Watchlist — moving pieces

Not yet consolidated standards, ordered by how much they could reshape the stack. The first two are the ones to track hardest.

Forcing function → method it pulls

Regulation is what turns a voluntary method into demand. This maps each Layer-4 driver to the measurement standards it activates — where the compliance-driven buyers actually come from.
